Stop trying to rank for Auckland
"Plumber Auckland" is contested by companies with marketing budgets larger than your annual revenue. You won't win it this year, and anyone who promises you will is after your money.
"Plumber Takapuna" is a different story. Auckland is enormous and split by water and motorway into markets that barely overlap. Somebody in Albany with a burst pipe is not calling Manukau, and Google has understood that for years: local results are filtered hard by distance, so the search that matters to you happens at suburb level.
That's good news if you're small. You only have to beat the plumbers near you, and you can do that with a well set up listing, real reviews and a page that names the suburbs you cover.
The four Aucklands
Pick the ones you will actually drive to. Ranking in a part of Auckland you will not service is the most expensive mistake in local SEO, and in Auckland the traffic makes it worse than anywhere else.
North Shore
Takapuna, Albany, Devonport, Milford. A bridge crossing is enough of a barrier that shore businesses and shore customers largely stay on the shore.
Central and isthmus
Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Newmarket, Parnell, Mount Eden. The most competitive and the most expensive, with the highest concentration of agencies.
West
Henderson, New Lynn, Titirangi, Massey. Growing fast in search terms and much less contested than central.
South and east
Manukau, Botany, Papakura, Howick. Large, diverse and frequently underserved by businesses that market only to the isthmus.
Wellington overheads, Auckland market
I'm in Wellington. For SEO that hardly matters, because the work happens in your Google listing and your website, not in a meeting room. It also takes a decent chunk off the price.
An Auckland agency carries Auckland rent, Auckland salaries and usually an account manager between you and whoever does the work. My prices are published, $1,500 to set up and $600 a month after that, and you deal with the person doing the job.
What I won't do is pretend to be local. Some agencies rent a virtual office or use a staff member's home address to claim a Google listing in a city they do not operate in. It breaches Google's guidelines, listings get suspended for it, and the suspension lands on your business name rather than on the agency. Your listing will be your real address, and if you have no Auckland premises at all we will build the strategy around service area pages instead.

Can a small business rank in Auckland at all?
In your suburb and the ones next to it, yes, reliably. Across the whole region against funded competitors, realistically no, not quickly. Aim the effort at the searches that happen within driving distance of you and Auckland becomes a much smaller and more winnable market.
Why hire someone in Wellington for Auckland SEO?
Price, mostly. SEO is done in your Google listing and your website rather than in person, so the location of the person doing it changes very little, while Auckland agency overheads change the invoice a lot. If you want someone who will sit in your office monthly, hire locally, and that is a fair reason to.
Can you get me a Google listing for Auckland?
Only if you have a genuine address or service area there. I will not rent a virtual office to fake one. If you have no Auckland premises, the honest route is service area pages plus a listing at your real location, and I will explain what that can and cannot achieve before you commit.
Is Auckland SEO more expensive?
