Web design in Wellington.
Squarespace sites for Wellington businesses, designed and built by one person you can actually have coffee with.
Designing for a city that notices design
Wellington is full of designers, with a screen industry in Miramar and a public sector that commissions a lot of creative work. Your customers here can tell a stock template from a considered layout, and they judge accordingly.
So design is worth paying for, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune. A Squarespace build with real custom CSS gets you a site that looks like it was made on purpose, for a fraction of what a Wellington agency charges for a bespoke build. I write the code where the platform runs out, so it does not look like the theme it started as.
What Wellington businesses usually need
A credibility site
For the consultancies, contractors and advisory firms that win work through relationships and government panels. Clients usually already have your name, and the site is there to reassure them. That means a real About page, clear capability statements and no marketing noise.
A bookings and menus site
Hospitality along Cuba Street, Te Aro and Newtown. Hours, menu, location and a booking link, loading fast on a phone in a bar with two bars of signal.
A quote-generating site
Trades and services across Wellington, Porirua and the Hutt. Photographs of real work, service areas spelled out, and a form that is easy to fill in one handed.
A portfolio site
For the makers, studios and screen sector freelancers. Image heavy without being slow, which is most of the craft in a portfolio build.
In person, if you want it
I am in Wellington. For a project starting here I will meet you at the beginning to work out what you need, and again at the design stage to walk through it before anything gets built.
After that most of the work happens without you, which is the point. You get a fixed quote in writing and a start date before any work happens, one round of design changes so nothing gets built twice, and a walkthrough at the end so you can change your own prices and photographs without calling me.
Most Wellington sites are live two to four weeks after your content is ready. The usual hold-up is waiting on text and photos, and I'm happy to help write the words.
Common questions
How much does a website cost in Wellington?
From $2,400 for a one page site, $3,900 for a small business site of five to seven pages, and from $5,600 for an online store. That is my fee. Squarespace's own subscription is roughly $30 to $70 a month and goes to them, not me. Every price is published rather than quoted after a call.
Can we meet in person?
Yes, and for Wellington projects I would rather. Usually twice: once at the start and once to walk through the design. The rest happens over email and the occasional call.
Do you work with businesses in the Hutt and Porirua?
Yes. Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Petone, Porirua and the Kapiti Coast are all a short drive and all inside the same region. Worth knowing that they behave as separate search markets, so if you want to be found out there the site needs pages that say so.
Why Squarespace rather than WordPress?
Less to break and nothing to patch every month. A large part of a WordPress build is plumbing you cannot see: hosting, security, plugin conflicts. Squarespace handles that, so the money goes into design and content instead. If your project genuinely needs custom software I will tell you at the quote.
