Moving from Wix to Squarespace without losing your Google rankings.

There's no one-click move from Wix to Squarespace, so the site gets rebuilt. That's usually a good thing. The part that needs care is keeping the search rankings and email you already have. Here's how it's done.

Why people move

The usual reasons: the Wix editor lets things drift out of line on mobile, the site has become a patchwork of apps, and the bill comes in Australian dollars. Squarespace's templates are stricter, which keeps the site tidy, and New Zealand customers pay in NZ dollars. There's a full comparison in Squarespace vs Wix vs WordPress.

The move, step by step

1. List every page

Before touching anything, record every address on the Wix site. Your sitemap at yoursite.co.nz/sitemap.xml lists them. Check Google Search Console too, to see which pages bring in visitors.

Do this first
2. Export what you can

Wix lets you export products and contacts as spreadsheet files, and Squarespace can import products from a spreadsheet. Pages, text and images get copied across by hand, which is also the moment to rewrite anything that isn't working.

3. Build on Squarespace

Build the new site on Squarespace while the Wix site stays live. Customers see no change until you switch.

No downtime
4. Set up redirects

Wix and Squarespace use different addresses. A Wix blog post sits at /post/name and a product at /product-page/name. In Squarespace, add a URL mapping from every old address to its new one. This step is what keeps your rankings.

5. Move the domain

If your domain was bought through Wix, you can either transfer it or keep it there and point it at Squarespace. Transferring a .nz domain needs a code called a UDAI from Wix.

6. Check after launch

Submit the new sitemap in Search Console, then watch for pages Google can't find over the next few weeks and add redirects for any you missed.

Don't lose your email

This is the step that catches people out. If your business email runs through Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, the email settings on your domain (the MX records) have to be copied across exactly when the domain moves. Get them wrong and email stops arriving, often without anyone noticing for a day or two.

Write down every DNS record on the domain before you change anything. While you're there, it's a good time to set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, which stop other people sending email that pretends to be from you.

Bookings, forms and members

If you use Wix Bookings, the Squarespace equivalent is Acuity Scheduling, which Squarespace owns. Forms and newsletter sign-ups are rebuilt with Squarespace's own blocks. Member areas move to Squarespace's member sites. Plan these early, since they're the parts customers actually use.

Common questions

Will I lose my Google rankings?

Not if every old address is redirected. A small dip for a few weeks while Google catches up is normal. Losing rankings for good almost always means redirects were skipped.

Can I import my Wix site into Squarespace?

Not directly. Squarespace imports from WordPress and a few blogging platforms, but not from Wix. Products can come across by spreadsheet, and everything else is rebuilt.

How long does the move take?

For a typical small business site, two to four weeks from the day the content is ready, the same as a new build. The switch itself takes an hour or so, plus time for the domain change to spread.

How much does it cost?

It's priced as a normal build, with the redirects and domain move included. See what a Squarespace website costs.
